Lately, I’ve noticed a considerable number of labels drawing inspiration from the pages of comic books and the leanings of Pop Art. Romance Was Born partnered with Marvel Comics for their Spring/Summer 2012/13 collection. Converse teamed up with DC Comics for a superhero inspired footwear line. MAC Cosmetics are collaborating with Archie Comics for their Spring 2013 collection. Phillip Lim took inspiration from iconic Lichtenstein works and translated them onto an array of ready-to-wear clothing and accessories. I don’t know if this trend has anything to do with the number of comic book inspired movie reboots happening at the moment, but the timing is quite convenient/advantageous. Regardless of what is ‘in’ right now, I’ll always have a soft spot for such comic stylings (I have very distinct memories of attending a Batman themed party in grade one and also had a comic book themed 18th birthday party). And while it’s not always feasible to walk out the door in a cape and spandex bodysuit, these are a few items that you can safely wear out in public.
Clockwise-ish from top left:
J.Crew polka-dot stretch-cotton capri pants (Ben-Day influences, anyone?)
