yeti feet

Dear Mr. Lagerfeld,

I think you have gone mad with power.

Please stop trying to make ugly shoes fashionable.

Kind regards,

Until yesterday, I happily existed in a world where furry ugg boots belonged in the domain of the bogan*. This meant that my contact with such footwear has been minimal**. However, Kaiser Karl has now decided that such footwear is appropriate for the catwalks. Yes, the furry ugg. With a heel, no less. I am distressed. For the S/S2010 collections he brought back the clog. I was not a fan of the clog. I admit, there are some decent looking pairs out there, and when styled well it can look good, but I am still not wholly on board. I have overlooked the clog. I don’t think I can overlook this.

I have no qualms with the rest of the collection, however. The jewellery in particular is quite spectacular. And you can’t go wrong with classic Chanel tweed. From about the knee up, everything is looking quite respectable.

I will even overlook the yeti suits and the shoes that are slightly reminiscent of those rubber boots that fishermen wear (I just googled this and apparently they are called ‘waders’).

But like I said before, I can’t overlook the furry ugg. I just can’t. Even if it is Chanel. I hope this is one trend that doesn’t take off***.

A Mean Girl said it best with: stop trying to make fetch happen.

*For non-Australians, bogan is the equivalent of white trash. Most common encounters occur in suburban shopping centres.
** One time, on a night out with my friends, I ran into a girl I used to go to school with wearing a pair. I think she was going to a rave. I avoided eye contact.
***I have recently learnt that Lanvin has also done a version of the furry boot for the FW2010 shows. I am biting my lip.

i'm with you on this – they're hideous! not even chanel can make the furry ugg fashionable. for me they just bring to mind little upstart kids hanging outside mcdonald's in the city being disruptive and annoying. if people start wearing these in paris i will weep. ugh!

  2. ♥ Christine March 11, 2010

    hahaa BARF ME!

  4. Tuesdai Noelle March 11, 2010

Aha, FIRST I have this urge to SAY; Chi-chi-chi -chia…because I think this is more like a Star Wars Convention rather than a fashion show. And on that note let's bring out the REAL star… Smh.

I know fashion is forever advancing and recreating itself, but goodness time to stop after while.

  5. Wendy March 11, 2010

A lot of shoes are too much besides walking the runway.

  6. ASYMMETRICERA March 11, 2010

haha, runway version of ugg boots? too true, but lagerfeld is stil genius:)

  7. welcometoviolence March 11, 2010

  14. Lulu March 11, 2010

yeah, these are pretty awful. it looks like they're wearing dead animals on their feet, to be quite blunt. not a huge fan of fur in particular (except for the faux kind 😉 and that big fir suit is monstrous! ah! the sad part is i love the rest of the clothes in the collection! i'm so TORN!

  15. Stace March 11, 2010

Okay so I'm vegan and dislike fur but found this show interesting and avant garde!

I had a giggle over the yeto style boots and I loved the melting-iceburg style show!

    Karl is a god.

Somewhere in New Jersey, Johnny Weir is going insane with feelings of IWantThat.

  24. Cotton Socks March 11, 2010

The full yeti suit with the brown/grey/white colourway you posted next to the boot pic is the best.
its like you walked into a costume party and someone came as a bear but they took the head off because it got too hot.
and they hired the bear costume from some musky old costume shop that says they dry clean it after every use but you can feel in the "fur" that its like all greasy and gross.
and then you wonder " what the hell did the other people who wore this do whilst wearing it?"

the yeti suit is the best.

  25. Amy T March 11, 2010

they are actually horrible! i agree with you so so so much!

Totally hideous. I gagged. 🙁 I love how brutally honest you are<3

  28. soph (owl vs. dove) March 12, 2010

@danica: Ahh how could I forget the typical fast food stomping grounds! I hope we don't start seeing these featured on the Sartorialist etc.

@tuesdai: Good point 😉 I'm all for fashion advancing and recreating, as long as it's in good taste.

@Wendy: Agreed, but I can still appreciate them as art (ie McQueen etc).

@Asymmetricera, @welcometoviolence, @everylittlecounts: Yep, Karl is still a genius, no doubt about that.

@UnoCosa: Definitely. I think Karl suceeded in creating something that would definitely create a lot of conversation.

@Lulu: The rest of the collection was quite lovely. It's a pity that the fur boots detract from all that.

@Stace: The iceberg was quite amazing. I mean, the man clicks his fingers and an ice berg appears in Paris! That's the right kind of mad man.

@daydreaminblue: Now that you've pointed that out I can't stop staring either! The melting iceberg definitely didn't help…

@Bubu: Thanks, will definitely visit your blog.

@Iwish: I think the only place I would find these acceptable is on Johnny Weir haha

@cottonsocks: haha that is the BEST description!

@MelanieM: Thank you! Am off to check out your blog now 🙂

  29. Bri March 12, 2010

    You are so right!
P.s. I think your blog is cool. Visit my fashion blog

  30. Ganymede Girl March 13, 2010

I'm not sure why people are offended that it's fur since it's faux fur, not real, but I have to completely agree with you this this is hideous, what the hell was Karl thinking!?

  31. Janelle March 13, 2010

I attended this show and it only worked for the models on the runway because the iceberg in the middle of the room was -4 degrees, plus it was -2 that morning too! Don't worry its only A/W collection, lets hope S/S is much better….shoe wise.

  32. soph (owl vs. dove) March 14, 2010

@GanymedeGirl: I guess since I didn't mention it was faux, people would assume the worst. Glad he did use faux tho.

@Janelle: You attended the show? Jealous! It must've been an amazing experience. Fingers crossed for S/S 🙂

  33. xs March 15, 2010

lol. sweet and to the point. i agree.
