shop: comic stylings

Lately, I’ve noticed a considerable number of labels drawing inspiration from the pages of comic books and the leanings of Pop Art. Romance Was Born partnered with Marvel Comics for their Spring/Summer 2012/13 collection. Converse teamed up with DC Comics for a superhero inspired footwear line. MAC Cosmetics are collaborating with Archie Comics for their Spring 2013 collection. Phillip Lim took inspiration from iconic Lichtenstein works and translated them onto an array of ready-to-wear clothing and accessories. I don’t know if this trend has anything to do with the number of comic book inspired movie reboots happening at the moment, but the timing is quite convenient/advantageous. Regardless of what is ‘in’ right now, I’ll always have a soft spot for such comic stylings (I have very distinct memories of attending a Batman themed party in grade one and also had a comic book themed 18th birthday party). And while it’s not always feasible to walk out the door in a cape and spandex bodysuit, these are a few items that you can safely wear out in public.

Clockwise-ish from top left:
Miu Miu cat eye glitter sunglasses
3.1 Phillip Lim printed cotton and modal-blend T-shirt
Comme des Garçons square side zip wallet
Zoe Karssen bat cotton-blend jersey sweatshirt
Sportsgirl desert belt 3 pack
Converse Chuck Taylor DC Comics Superman sneakers
3.1 Phillip Lim Bang leather and calf hair mini shoulder bag
J.Crew polka-dot stretch-cotton capri pants (Ben-Day influences, anyone?)

I love that bat sweater. And the KaPow top. And the Converse. I've got my eye on the Wonder Woman low-tops. SO. FREAKING. CUTE.

Yes! I've noticed this trend recently as well, and assumed it was in response to the success of big blockbuster comic book movies. And also the fact that the bright, contrasting colours of superheroes lend themselves so much to fashion anyway!

I love those DC Converse sneakers.

And I forgot to mention Karla Spetic's latest collection with Lichtenstein inspired prints, and Yayoi Kusama's recent collaboration with Louis Vuitton (pop art influences rather than comic, but still). Plus there's basically everything that Jeremy Scott's ever done.

Thank you! I still keep an eye out for the Alexa Chung bat tee on eBay but it still sells for an arm and a leg. Thinking a DIY is in order!
